Haut-Rhin is a department in northeastern France, lying along the German border, with a continental climate that brings warm summers (around 77°F / 25°C) and chilly winters (around 32°F / 0°C). It's famous for the Alsatian Wine Route, where you can bike past vineyards and stop for tastings in medieval villages like Riquewihr, and for the Vosges Mountains, where you can hike to the summit of Grand Ballon in summer or ski at Le Markstein in winter. During winter, visit Colmar's Christmas markets with their 16th-century wooden stalls, while in summer, you can swim in the clear waters of Lac Blanc or explore the fortified town of Neuf-Brisach, designed by Vauban in the 17th century.
